American Presidents: Life Portraits

Part biography and part travelogue, this superb site profiles the personal and public lives of each of the presidents of the United States. The biographical information provided is brief, but resources for further study are included. The real strength of this site is its capability to search for notable sites associated with each of the presidents. Great for planning trips, entries include a description, map, and contact information for over 100 presidential places. Produced by C-SPAN to complement their American Presidents: Life Portraits television series.

Biographical Dictionary

This dictionary includes more than 25,000 notable men and women who have shaped our world from ancient times to the present day. The dictionary can be searched by names, birth years, death years, positions held, professions, literary and artistic works, miscellaneous achievements, and other keywords.

Biographical Directory of the United States Congress, 1774 to Present

Biographical information for all individuals who have served in the United States Congress and the Continental Congress. Biographies are also included for persons who have served as delegates to Congress from the territories of the United States. This is a definite enhancement of the print version of the same name, with images of many, material from other sources, and updated through the current Congress. Using the drop-down lists, you can create useful lists, for example, a list of all U.S. Presidents who served in the Congress.

Catholic Online Saints and Angels

Provides biographical sketches of saints and information about angels. Saint's names can be searched or browsed.

Civil War Biographies

Contains biographies of some of the major personalities involved in the American Civil War. These biographies are accompanied by an image of the individual were possible. However, they make no attempt to provide information concerning the individuals entire life, merely their contribution to the Civil War.

An exclusive history of presidents, the presidency, politics and related subjects from grades 3 to adult.

National Women's Hall of Fame

Portraits and profiles of the close to two hundred notable women of the United States (living and deceased) inducted into the Hall of Fame since its founding in 1969. Some of the women so honored include Helen Keller, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Lucy Stone, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Maria Tallchief, Sojourner Truth, Harriet Tubman, Ida B. Wells-Barnett, Edith Wharton, and Mildred "Babe" Didrikson Zaharias. The Learning Center provides "exhibits, exercises, games and resources to increase your understanding of women's contribution to American culture and the struggle for equal rights for women."

Presidents of the United States

Internet Public Library provides this site containing background information, election results, cabinet members, presidency highlights, and some odd facts on each of the presidents. Links to biographies, historical documents, audio and video files, and other presidential sites are also available.

Heraldica

A large and authoritative collection of articles and images devoted to heraldry that includes information on coats of arms and characteristics of heraldry by country. There is a glossary that can translate terms into English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, and Dutch along with a heraldic atlas of plates that contains about 520 illustrations for all the terms. There are related links, FAQs, and a bibliography. 

Heraldry on the Internet

Arms and armor, clan plaids, insignia, and more colorful accoutrements of genealogy are gathered here in what is mostly a directory of links to various sources of heraldic material. Submissions of copyright-free clip art are welcome.

A Century of Lawmaking for a New Nation: U.S. Congressional Documents and Debates 1774 - 1875

Includes the records of the First and Second Congresses, 1789-1793: the House and Senate Journals, the Senate Executive Journal, the Annals of Congress, and the Journal of William Maclay, Senator from Pennsylvania in the First Congress, approximately 4,400 pages in all. This site is an outstanding resource for anyone studying this period in British history. The encyclopedia currently contains over 2,000 entries and is being added to continuously. It is "an attempt to show the history of Britain through the eyes of people from all levels of society. Each entry includes narrative, illustrations, primary sources and bibliography." Produced by Spartacus, a publishing company formed by a group of teachers.

A wealth of information for anyone restoring an old home or with an interest in historic preservation. Along with a general overview of the standards established by the U.S. Secretary of the Interior and their relation to the Federal Historic Preservation Tax Incentives program, there are illustrated guides of recommended and not recommended practices for specific materials and features (e.g., masonry, wood, metal, windows, roofs, storefronts, etc.). There is also information on structural and mechanical systems; spaces, features and finishes; energy conservation; accessibility; health and safety issues; and new additions. Searchable.

Internet Islamic History Sourcebook

As a site which contains "collections of public domain and copy-permitted historical texts," this is great for finding primary historical resources. The three primary historical sourcebooks cover Ancient, Medieval, and Modern History.  

Medieval Technology Pages

This Web site provides referenced information on "technological innovation and related subjects in western Europe during the Middle Ages." Agricultural tools, silk, windmills, and the horizontal loom are among the subjects covered. The articles are organized by subject or in chronological order of 200-year intervals. Also provided are estimates of the population of the larger urban areas.

The Old News History links are a mixture of free information and commercial sites. The Titanic Home Page offers a wealth of information including statistics, history, passenger lists etc. There is information on the Opium Wars in China, the Glencoe Massacre, the Rosetta Stone and many other historical events.

Veterans History Project

The Library of Congress and its American Folklife Center invite you to join in an important national project--the Veterans History Project. "Preserving stories of service for future generations." From June 17 - July 29, 2005, Congressman David Drier will be welcoming all veterans residing in the 26th District to participate in the 2nd annual Veterans History Project. At David Dreier's district office located at 2220 E Route 66, Suite 225, Glendora, CA 91740, Veterans can bring biographical data, photographs, and video recordings. Interviews will also be conducted.  The information gathered will be sent to the Library of Congress so that future generations will know the sacrifices and heroism displayed by those who served this great country.
