Griffith Observatory Home Page

Griffith Observatory is a non-profit educational institution whose purpose is to provide information on astronomy and related sciences to the public. The Observatory is divided into three main areas: the Hall of Science astronomy museum, the telescopes, and the Planetarium Theater.

The Nine Planets: A Multimedia Tour of the Solar System

An excellent site for demonstrating the educational and visual appeal of the Internet. Nine Planets contains information, pictures, and statistics relating to the nine planets and their sun and moons. Information about comets, meteors, "other solar systems," clouds, and asteroids is also presented.

Science @ NASA

Partner with NASA providing "daily news about NASA research, live sky events, space weather, and opportunities...to participate in real NASA science." Featured is an affiliated site Space Weather, which respectively provide lesson plans and activities about science in the news and information about current weather phenomena. News is archived (select More Headlines) back to 1996.


Sky and Telescope

Learn about the sky above and outer space beyond from Sky and Telescope magazine. Includes weekly 'observing highlights'.   

StarDate Online

Excellent educational astronomical site. Sections include stargazing tips; Sky Almanac; telescope guide; annual events; full-text of their daily StarDate radio program; AstroGlossary; FAQ file; Solar System Guide; and more. Also available in Spanish as Universo Online. From the University of Texas McDonald Observatory.

Virtual Tour of the Sun

A visual tour of the sun using photographs, diagrams, and movies. Subjects such as solar flares, solar wind, and sunspots are discussed. Each page has clickable images with text, others enlarge for closer viewing. One movie shows the complete eclipse of the sun. Useful for teachers and kids alike.

This is an extensive database of biology links that can used to access a selection of websites and newsfeeds.

Endangered Species

Since 1961 the World Wildlife Fund has been working to protect endangered species. Use this site to learn about the status of key endangered species such as tigers, elephants and giant pandas.

Human Anatomy Online

Patients and professionals can explore the different body systems using anatomy labels that link to illustrations and descriptions. There is an 18-page general anatomy lesson, as well as the Interactive Anatomy with pictures and over 100 animations. Java is needed to see the pictures and animations. Created by Informative Graphics Corporation which produces viewing software.

It's Elemental: the Periodic Table of Elements - Jefferson Lab

An education site for learning about the elements that make up the Periodic table. This website is part of the Jefferson Lab supported by the U.S. Dept. of Energy.

The most complete table of elements. Contains links to data from Hydrogen, element 1 to Ununbium, element 112, discovered February 9, 1996, the heaviest element.

Aviation Week & Space Technology

Daily updates of the latest in civil and military aviation and space industry news and analysis. Includes selected full-text articles from the print version, plus headlines and links to news from Aviation Daily and Aerospace Daily magazines and nice list of other Web aviation resources.

How Stuff Works

Explains simply, with excellent diagrams or pictures, how many common appliances, machines, and technologies work. Also covers health, animals, and the home. A small sample of topics covered includes: smoke detectors, remote controls, UPC bar codes, bread, digital clocks or watches, compasses, microwave ovens, fuel cells, hybrid cars, Boolean logic, lock picking, and more. Many have links to Web sites or related articles for further reading. Some of these articles might be useful for background for science projects.

The Exploratorium is a museum of science, art, and human perception located in San Francisco, California. Online since 1993, the Exploratorium was one of the first science museums to build a site on the World Wide Web. Included in the site are more than 12,000 Web pages and many sound and video files, exploring hundreds of different topics.

Frank Potter's Science Gems
